This fun, engaging, and creative course is geared towards 2nd and 3rd graders. This program focuses on building acting foundations with dance, singing, acting, improv & voice & speech . Faculty will help students develop their imaginations and creativity, and teach them an appreciation of the art of theatre as an vital part of our human existence. Students will use their body and voice to communicate physically and emotionally. Working in groups allows students to value and respect the ideas of others by being in contact with each other (listening and answering). Students will come up with stories, make up characters, and act them out in addition to working with written, published text.
Classes in:
Singing
This class provides a warm, nurturing environment introducing the foundation of healthy singing - breath and alignment, placement and tone - so that students gain a deeper understanding of their own voice, while building confidence. We study the anatomy of the voice and establish warm up routines geared to the age of the students. This foundation is expanded upon with ear training exercises and games, explorations in phrasing and musical interpretation, and an introduction to music theory (touching on sight-reading, rhythm, dynamics, and notation). All of this is then applied to assigned music (solos, duets, or group numbers) in a way that connects technique to interpretation so students perform with ease and confidence. Fostering a love of music is key.
Dance/Movement
Agility and range of physical motion are vital qualities for the actor. Movement taught in all age groups and in all programs (Summer & Saturdays). The teacher works with each student on an individual level to refine their specific ability to dance and express through movement. The class will consist of warm-up, floor exercises, improv exercises, and dance combinations becoming more intricate and challenging as the students age through the program. In this foundational class, students will learn to use movement as a form of storytelling, use their bodies and voices to become characters, and identify how to isolate and utilize their body while performing a character.
Acting
To introduce students to the Meisner technique, they will learn to recognize the basic elements of theatre and play production in order to demonstrate an understanding of the collaborative nature of theatre: creative problem solving, writing/editing, and time-budgeting skills. Students safely explore movement and space, vocal projection/enunciation, improvisation theatre games, text analysis, character creation, and expand their imagination.
