Percussionist Mark Katsaounis has played in symphony orchestras,
chamber ensembles, percussion ensembles, steel bands, African drumming
and dance groups, and World Music Fusion groups. Currently he is
freelancing in the greater New York area.
Mark has performed with ensembles and musicians such as The Glen Velez
Frame Drums Ensemble, Percussion Group/Cincinnati, Ethos Percussion
Group, Orchestra of St. Lukes, Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas,
Rhythm Vocalist Lori Cotler, and Indian Dancer/Storyteller Rajika Puri.
Additionally, he has been heard on live television and radio broadcasts
in the U.S and Mexico. An active modern dance accompanist, Mark is a
staff musician at The Alvin Ailey School and The Neighborhood Playhouse
in New York City.
Mark earned his BM in percussion from The Hartt School of Music (U. of
Hartford) and his MM in percussion from the College-Conservatory of
Music (U. of Cincinnati), where he studied and performed with
percussion Group/Cincinnati. He also studied extensively with frame
drum virtuoso, Glen Velez. Although he is classically trained, Mark has
spent many years studying drumming traditions from different parts of
the world and has fused them to create his own unique sound.
